Increasingly SMEs are seeking professional expertise to manage their forex and currency markets strategy, as Ruth Le Pla reports.

Many exporting small and medium size businesses (SMEs) have fretted their way through an export year marked by one of the most volatile foreign exchange markets for years. It's both ironic and downright worrying.

The rise and rise of the New Zealand dollar has proved a sore point for many businesses. The Kiwi has climbed ten percent against the US dollar since the start of the year. A lot of that movement has happened since the global financial markets got a big shake-up at the end of July. Making matters worse, against the Japanese Yen (another common currency for many of our exporters and importers) our dollar has moved 24 percent since late July.

As with most markets, the fluctuations stem from a series of interconnecting events.

Vipul Kapoor, corporate trader and branch manager New Zealand at Globex Foreign Exchange Corporation, attributes this year's wild swings to four main factors.

Firstly, he says, the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the US put tremendous pressure on markets. Add to this, the New Zealand Reserve Bank's intervention in the foreign exchange market earlier this year, hikes in local interest rates and an overall volatility in stock markets worldwide.

All of which means that those SMEs still seeing foreign exchange risk management as solely an inhouse job, would have had their work cut out for them during Export Year.

Strange though it sounds, many SMEs are still relying on what they perceive to be their inherent skills in managing their own forex decisions. This is probably a hangover from previous years when less was at stake and a less professional approach could be understood if maybe not excused.

Increasingly, though, SMEs are cottoning on to the benefits of professional expertise when it comes to handling their foreign exchange exposure. It's hard to put an exact figure on it.

Jim Devonport, director of forex trading and advisory firm DIME (Devonport International Markets E-Trading), guesstimates that somewhere between 60 to 70 percent of our SME exporters have a foreign exchange risk policy in place.

While there's still plenty of room for improvement, that, at least, is way better than the approach taken by individual Kiwis. A recent report by HiFX into our foreign exchange behaviour revealed that 94 percent of us did not seek professional advice even when conducting our largest foreign exchange transactions over the past two years.

"Instead," HiFX reports, "the majority of Kiwis chose a risky 'do-it-yourself approach, using exchange rate boards, newspapers, TV or the Internet to obtain foreign exchange information."

That may not be too different from how some companies handle their overseas currencies.

"I spoke to one tanning firm in Christchurch the other day where the accountant likes to play at being a foreign exchange trader," says Devonport. "When the receipts come through, he [sometimes] decides to sit on the US dollars or the currency that's coming through the door and trade it at his own leisure. If he'd locked in the rate prior to the currency coming through into his account the company itself would at least know exactly where they are and what exchange rate they are generating and have much more of an idea of their profit potential going forward."

Devonport suggests companies face market uncertainty head on.

"Lock in a rate and get on with what you do best: and that is running your business. Let the forex professionals look after the business of foreign exchange," he says. "Like any good accountant the rewards of their actions should cover their costs."

SMEs can get badly burnt by wrong decisions in volatile markets. As Kapoor puts it: "Multinational companies employ teams of finance professionals to manage the forex risk for their businesses at enormous cost. Small businesses are not able to invest a lot of money in their forex side but the same risks, though, exist for any business trading in a multi-currency environment regardless of their size."

The timing of transactions is crucial. Devonport tells a story of how he used to work for one of New Zealand's top exporting firms. "In one year our export gains were dwarfed by our forex wins. The company made more money locking in the forex gains than it did from its principal business."

It cuts both ways. Look, for example, at the pricing of the New Zealand dollar on any one day, says Mike Hollows, director trading, at HiFX. It doesn't matter whether you're talking about the absolute wholesale rate or the public bank rates that are set each day.

"There is probably less than a one percent spread between those two on an average day of volatility in the New Zealand dollar. You can expect in interbank terms a payment of one percent. Now, that's going to represent good savings for a client if they get close to the interbank rate. However, if you look at the New Zealand dollar over, say, the past seven weeks and it's moved 13 percent. If you get your timing wrong in relation to your business, it doesn't take much to work out that that's going to be a substantial effect on the bottom line." (by Pla, Ruth Le)

Forex, trade and politics

To understand politics, most of the time you just have to follow the money. While central banks manage economies through interest rates, politicians use a variety of methods to influence trade and move markets.

You don't need to be an Einstein to understand that everything is relative. Whether we are talking about being early vs. being late, or being cheap vs. being expensive, you need a point of reference to make meaningful qualitative or quantitative distinctions. The same is true for money.

FIXED AND FLOATING CURRENCIES

Without turning this into a history lesson, here's a little background. After the end of World War 11 and with their economies in ruin, the 44 Allied countries met in Bretton Woods, N. H. in July 1944 and fixed the value of the U.S. dollar relative to gold at the rate of $35 per ounce. The value of the non-U.S. currencies were then individually fixed to the value of the dollar, et voila, the gold standard was bom. Each of the countries knew where they stood relative to the U.S. dollar, and where the dollar stood relative to an ounce of gold. Individual currencies were allowed to vary within a narrow band and if they floated out of that range, central banks adjusted monetary policy to bring them back in line.

That worked great for a while, but the United States had limited gold reserves and certainly not enough to cover all of the currency in circulation, a situation akin to check kiting, and the lack of gold and dollars put a damper on global economic activity.

To relieve the strain on the U.S. economy and to allow for global economic expansion, something had to give. Then President Richard M. Nixon unilaterally killed the gold standard in August 1971. In response to global economic instability that resulted, the G-10, a group of Western economic powers, entered the Smithsonian Agreement in December of that year. The agreement devalued the U.S. dollar to $38 per ounce of gold, eliminated the direct convertibility of dollars to gold and allowed the value of the U.S. dollar to float within a narrow range, and the fiat currency system was born. The United States was in the midst of the Vietnam War and continued deficit spending. The value of the dollar plummeted relative to other currencies based on supply and demand, the agreement fell apart, and within a few years all of the major industrialized countries eliminated their pegs to the U.S. dollar and floated freely, their value decided in the market place by supply and demand. One current and notable exception is China, which values its currency, called the yuan or the renminbi, against a basket of Western currencies, much like an index, and allows the value to float within couple of percentage points.

MOVING THE FOREX MARKET

What can you buy for a dollar today? Less and less is the obvious answer, but the real question is "why?" Now that currency values float freely, they reflect more accurately the economic condition of their home country and, generally speaking, there are three factors that determine the health of an economy: productivity, a measure of how much stuff is produced; investment, reflecting a confidence in that productivity; and interest rates, which attach a time value to resources invested in that productivity.

Forex traders are very interested in productivity, and they track productivity at the macro level with the gross domestic product and employment statistics. When it comes to productivity, more is better, and countries with high levels of productivity and high employment levels tend to have strong economies. However, too much productivity and employment can result in inflation, which is a devaluation of the currency.

Forex traders also are interested in whether money is being invested in, or divested from, an economy. Money flowing into a country is good, reflecting confidence in future productivity. Capital flowing out means that the grass is greener elsewhere. The United States Treasury tracks international capital flow and publishes its findings on a quarterly basis in the Treasury International Capital System, commonly called TICS data (see "Checking for TICS," right). The TICS data describes U.S. and non-U.S. government and private party investments in corporate and government securities, meaning stocks and bonds. Other productivity measures are trade and budget balances.

Interest rates are where everything comes together in contemporary economics and foreign exchange trading. Central banks, such as the Federal Reserve Bank in the United States, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England, among many others, stimulate growth and squash inflation by increasing or decreasing short-term interest rates. When economies are growing too quickly, central banks raise interest rates to temper inflation and lower them to stimulate borrowing and economic growth (see "Forex fundamentals: Moving the markets," January 2007). Inflation is another important issue for forex traders, and to monitor inflation, they track the consumer price index (CPI), producer price index (PPI) and consumer spending (PCI), which are available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hurricanes, fires, tornados: How can you help members?

While the fires raged in Southern California in October, one credit union asked about offering a disaster assistance loan on the CUES Net(TM) listserve.

"Our credit union is not in the Southern California fire zones; however, some of our members are.

"We are thinking of offering a nointerest, short-term loan to those who have been affected by the fire. For those credit unions who have done this before, what kind of documentation or proof do you require to get the loan.

"I don't know if it's wise to give it to anyone who comes in and says they were affected. Any info on prior loans of this nature would be appreciated," wrote Steve Stoppel, president/ CEO of $73 million/6,000-member Torrance Federal Credit Union (www.torrancefcu.org), Torrance, Calif.

CASE BY CASE

"We'd handled this on a case-by-case basis except when we had a couple dozen members affected by the Loma Prieta earthquake in October '89," wrote Christine L. Brown, president/CEO of $76 million/6,700-member Tyco Federal Credit Union (www.TycoCU.coop), Menlo Park, Calif. "In that case, we granted a loan as high as their earthquake insurance deductible with a 10-year term and at a reduced rate. Our sponsor subsidized the loans (they were going to do the loans themselves at zero interest and were happy to step in and subsidize the expense).

"The really great thing was that they also guaranteed the loans!

"When Hurricane Andrew hit our North Carolina members (in 1992), we offered the same type of program but had no takers. We did end up just increasing a lot of Visa card limits immediately so folks could meet living expenses."

MAKE MEMBERS FOR LIFE

One thing is clear: Assistance during a disaster will go a long way in building member goodwill.

"We have a disaster loan program that we have implemented for events like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, etc.," wrote Gail Enda, SVP/lending and product management at $4.3 billion/ 210,000-member American Airlines Federal Credit Union (www.aacred.it union.org), Fort Worth, Texas. Members can borrow up to a $1,000 in disaster loans. The term length is 12 months

"The goal of the program is to provide some immediate assistance to members before their insurance proceeds or FEMA funds come through. In addition, it helps members with some incremental expenses such as hotel accommodations that they had not planned for.

"Therefore, it is a very small loan. But, it builds great loyalty. For existing members, it is a non-qualifying loan. The vast majority of the loans are C and D paper so the rate of 9.75 percent is still low relative to most other unsecured loans available. We only offer it when FEMA has declared an emergency or a disaster and individual assistance is being provided (vs. a disaster where only communities or municipalities receive assistance from FEMA). The California wildfires fall into the individual assistance category. We typically originate the loans for a 30-day period following the declaration of the disaster.

"Most of our experience with this type of loan has been in Florida. The overall disaster loan portfolio performs slightly better than breakeven (i.e. the interest income covers the charge-offs). We believe the electronic payment requirement helps (ACH, payroll deduction, etc.).

"In addition, this product has had repeat borrowers (the nature of hurricanes!). They know if they don't pay it back, they can't get it the next time around."

Other requirements for American Airlines FCU's emergency loans include:

* Members must be in good standing: If a member is delinquent on any loan with the credit union, they are not eligible for a disaster loan.

* If not currently a member, must have A or B credit.

Early education and clear explanations of student loan terms may help decrease delinquent debt

While a college education may be priceless, for many families it's not exactly affordable. In fact, today the average cost to attend a public four-year college has risen to $6,185 a year, according to the College Board's Trends in College Pricing 2007 report, and students can pay an average of $95 to $1,404 more than they did last year for tuition. Happily, there is a silver lining: More than $130 billion in financial aid is available to combat these costs.

As tuition and fees continue to increase, educating students about the costs and repayment terms of student loans is important. For Jenny Hebert, loans and collections supervisor for Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., in a perfect world financial literacy would start with the orientation process. Although students might not be ready to discuss the terms of the loans they'll face upon graduation, Herbert said it's important to make the information available.

"We put ourselves out there and try to communicate to students who we are on campus," she said. "We make ourselves available from the beginning."

Western Washington's annual costs for 2007/08 are $16,407, which includes tuition, books, supplies, room and board, transportation, and miscellaneous costs. Hebert's department collects on out-of-pocket tuition and Perkins loans, in addition to providing entrance and exit counseling for the loans.

When students obtain a federal loan, such as a Perkins loan, federal requirements mandate they have to complete an entrance interview before they begin school and an exit interview after they complete their education. The entrance and exit interviews typically provide an overview of repayment terms, required minimum payments and an explanation of their obligation to repay the loan regardless of whether or not they completed a degree program or were satisfied with their education.

Hebert noted that because students sign the master promissory note electronically, it can be easy to skim over the loan repayment terms, along with other vital information.

"Unless you capture their full attention and say, 'This is really a loan that you have to pay back,' they might not get that impression," Hebert said. "Put your information out there for students so they understand."

For the 2005 fiscal year, Western's Federal Family Education Loan and Federal Direct Loan (FFEL/FDL) cohort default rate was 1 percent, while the most recent U.S. Department of Education numbers from the 2005 fiscal year for a four-year private school showed a FFEL/FDL cohort default rate of 2.3 percent. According to Hebert, the default status tends to be higher on the Perkins loans side than for other student receivables. As of Dec. 31, 2007, Western's cohort default rate for Federal Perkins loans was 2.09 percent.

Sherman Shaw, supervisor of collection services at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., said the university's loan department sends out balance statements once a year so students can see how much they are borrowing. Students often default on their student loans because they don't understand what debt they owe after they're done with school.

He noted that Washington University's default rate is less than 2 percent, and that since most students who graduate are well employed, the reason for missing a payment is usually because they didn't see the bill or forgot about the loan.

Although student loans are ultimately the responsibility of the student, Hebert said in some instances students' parents will fill out the exiting paperwork. The problem is that the students may not understand their repayment options, which can lead to late or missed payments.

Shaw agreed, noting that a small percentage of Washington University students let their parents fill out the paperwork, potentially missing out on important information.

"We're trying to get students to participate in the process," Shaw said. "The education process isn't just about the education you get at the university, it's education about your finances, too."

Students attending Washington University, which could cost up to $46,132 a year for tuition and housing, can apply for a Perkins loan; an institutional loan, which assists international students; or a loan through the parent loan program, similar to the Federal Parent Loan Program. Shaw's department collects on all three loans, and his collectors work with students who are experiencing difficulty making their payments.

Shaw added that university collections departments should maintain an open dialogue with students so they feel comfortable contacting their collectors if they don't think they'll be able to make one or more of their payments.

"There are enough options out there that if a student calls their collection representative, they can get help," he said. "The biggest difficulty is getting them to make that call."

Some of these options include requesting forbearance on the loans, which would grant the student up to 36 months before the next payment. Shaw recommends students use their forbearance in six- to 12-month increments. (by Remley, Rachel)

Scientific research has revealed that throughout the living world, communication is just as important as it is to human beings. Countless living things lack the capacity for human speech, yet they employ entirely different methods in order to communicate with each other—and even with other species. Some of the most dramatic examples of this is displayed by birds. The astonishing behavior and ability to communicate that birds exhibit also totally invalidates the claims of the theory of evolution.

All forms of life on Earth have been created with miraculous properties and astonishing abilities. The examination of just one single species is enough to reveal hundreds of proofs of God’s magnificent creation.

In one verse of the Qur’an, Allah reveals that:

There is no creature crawling on the earth or flying creature, flying on its wings, who are not communities just like yourselves—We have not omitted anything from the Book—then they will be gathered to their Lord. (Qur’an, 6: 38)

The birds to which this verse draws our attention notice are one of the living communities that we need to examine and reflect upon.

There are roughly some 10,000 species of bird in the world, each of which possesses its own miraculous features. Wherever you may live, you can see a great number of these feathered creatures and can observe different and extraordinary properties in each and every one. With their attractive appearances, flawless flight mechanisms, expertise on the routes and timing of migrations, ability to build nests and altruistic behavior toward their young and to one another, birds possess countless proofs of the fact of creation. Their ability to communicate is another of these.

Birds' Sense of Hearing

For birds to display their talents in communicating by sound, song—and in the case of some birds, words— they require excellent hearing. At critical times in their lives, their sense of hearing becomes particularly important. Experiments have shown that in order for birds to learn the distinctive song of their own species, they need an auditory feedback system. Thanks to this system, young birds learn to compare the sounds they produce themselves with the patterns of a song they have memorized. If they were deaf, it wouldn't normally be possible for them to sing recognizable songs. (1)

Birds' ears are well equipped for hearing, but they hear in a different way from us. For them to recognize a tune, they have to hear it in always the same octave (a series of seven notes), whereas we humans can recognize a tune even if we hear it in a different octave. Birds cannot, but can instead recognize timbre—a fundamental note combined with harmonies. The ability to recognize timbre and harmonic variations lets birds hear and reply to many diverse sounds, and sometimes even reproduce them.

Birds can also hear shorter notes than we can. Humans process sounds in bytes in about 1/20th of a second (2), whereas birds can distinguish these sounds in 1/200th of a second (3). This means that birds are superior at differentiating sounds that arrive in very rapid succession.(4) In other words, a bird's capacity to perceive sound is approximately ten times greater than ours; and in every note heard by a human, it can hear ten.(5) Moreover, some birds are also able to hear lower-frequency sounds than we are. Their hearing sensitivity is so finely tuned that they can even tell the difference between pieces by such famous composers as Bach and Stravinsky.

Birds' extremely sensitive hearing functions perfectly. Clearly, each of this sense's components is created by special design, for if any one failed to work properly, the bird would not be able to hear any sounds at all. This point also disproves the theory that hearing evolved or emerged gradually, as a result of coincidental influences.

Communication and Signaling in Birds

Birds produce meaningful communications by their facial expressions, beak movements, feather ruffling, elongating their necks, crouching, bouncing, and flapping their wings. Although each species has its own body language, many different species interpret movements in the same way. For example, various species interpret an upward thrust of the beak as expressing the intention to fly, and the lowering of the breast as a warning of danger. Also, several species perceive raising the tail feathers as a threat, or displaying bright colors atop of the head as a declaration of the intent to attack. Via facial expression, birds can convey a variety of messages to those around them-negative feelings such as dislike and resentment, as well as positive ones like pleasure, enthusiasm and curiosity. Bird’s Facial Expressions

Birds produce different facial expressions by movements of the beak, or by positioning the feathers above the beak, on the chin, or atop the head. In some species, the feathers above the eye can also move independently. Moreover, many species make a display by opening their beaks. For example, the tawny frogmouth opens its beak to reveal its large, bright green oral cavity, emphasizing the size of its beak and making it appear more intimidating. Some other species open their beaks as a form of threatening behavior, usually silently, but sometimes enhance the performance with hissing or loud breathing. (7)

Besides communicating by means of body language, birds produce a great variety of sounds to communicate with other members of their flock, neighbors, or family members. These range from short, simple calls to songs that are surprisingly long and complex. Sometimes birds such as the green woodpecker use different instruments or, like the American woodpecker, use special feathers to produce sound.

Birds also communicate through scents, although since their sense of smell is poor, their communication is based mainly on sound and sight. At times of poor visibility, as at night or in dense foliage, sound is most advantageous, and is also the ideal method for long-distance communication. If conditions are right, birdsong can be heard for up to a few kilometers.

In addition to song, birds also have conceptualization and communication skills. In certain circumstances, they demonstrate talents equivalent to those of children of primary-school age, learning series of words and other means of human communication through social interaction. When alone, these parrots play vocalization games and when in the company of people, they join vocalizations together to produce new assemblages from existing sequences of speech. God, the Creator of everything on Earth and in the skies, equips them with the talents and characteristics that set them apart. Accordingly, our praises for the supreme beauty of our environment is praise that belongs to God.

The Language of Calls and Songs

To call to one another, birds produce sounds of extremely high frequency and strength. Only a few species such as pelicans, storks, and certain vultures are mute and have no call. The acoustic calls used by birds amongst themselves form a language of sorts. Their songs, which are longer and generally related to courtship, consist of a series of notes and usually contain melodies.
Birdsong is usually heard in spring, whereas the calls, much simpler than songs, are used by both sexes and heard throughout the year. Birdcalls allow swift communication via simple messages without a great expenditure of energy. (8) These calls’ main functions can be listed as follows:

- To establish a bird’s species
- To indicate its bird's gender
- To reveal its location
- To demarcate and defend its territory
- To announce and advertise a source of food
- To let young birds recognize their own parents
- To keep the flock together when traveling
- To warn of the presence of an enemy
- To intimidate an enemy
- For courtship

To mark the changeover of responsibility for nesting duties such as incubating or feeding
To practice and perfect their songs

Bird Sounds Are Not Haphazard

Usually, birdsong is not composed of randomly produced sounds. Songs are exceptionally diverse melodies of specific meaning, sung for a purpose, and are much more complex than the calls used for signaling. They are generally used by males to advertise and defend a territory, or in courtship. It is also believed that songs serve a social function. When a pair is building their nest, they also establish communication by song. Experiments on caged birds have also demonstrated that birds find it easier to learn songs if another bird is present, but out of sight, in another cage. (9)

Male and female songbirds have different brain structures, particularly in the regions related to sound production. With many songbird species, the males can sing, but the females cannot. The males use "song" to call their mates or designate a tree, pole, or electrical cable as a place to perch. Each species sings a song with its own characteristics, but any given species' songs display variations according to age, sex, particular time of year, and geographical location-appropriate for the environment in which they live. For example, birds that live in meadows use "songs of flight." Similarly, ones that live in the dense foliage of rain forests or reed thickets have loud voices to compensate for reduced visibility.

God’s Miracle of Inspiration

As we have explained, birds employ the most suitable methods of communication for their habitats and objectives. There is no question of every bird being able to know which song it should sing under which circumstances, or to calculate on its own the meaning and purpose of the song it will sing. According to the Darwinist way of thinking, however, all the birds and other living creatures that we see around us, , all the abilities that they exhibit and all the beauty that they display, are the products of blind chance. Yet obviously, the consciousness and design that pervade life and living things at every moment cannot be explained in terms of a series of mere coincidences.

Living things devoid of reason and judgment can exhibit such behavior because such intelligence and consideration of the future are inspired in them by God. God creates every living thing with the characteristics it requires and inspires its appropriately intelligent behavior. All living things perform only those functions that God inspires in them, serving as a means whereby we are able to witness His might. In one verse of the Qur’an, God reveals:

The better conditioned your body is, you can perform crisp techniques and maneuvers much longer with more strength behind them. When your martial arts techniques are sharper, you tend to waste less of your energy which is important in matches. The problems is many martial arts student waste precious time with their conditioning workouts, sticking to routines that have nothing to do with the training they need.

* Suicide sprints - Be prepared to run! First off you'll begin by dividing up the field you're running in into two equal in length sections. Now that you've done that, start off at the far end of the field and then sprint as fast as you can to the first checkpoint, touching the ground as you do so. You'll then sprint back to where you started. You then will either run to the next checkpoint or to the end the field, depending on how you marked it, touch the ground again, and sprint back to the beginning. Congratulations. You've just completed one full rep. Now try to do anywhere between 2 and 5 reps. Suicide sprints work your cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, speed and agility.

* Squat jumps - Begin by positioning your legs so that your your feet are slightly apart. Now, bending your knees, you squat down and then jump up with as much effort as you can. After land back on the ground, you need to immediately do the same thing again. You don't want to have any pauses between your jumping motions. It should be continuous and smooth. Aim for about between 10 and 30 jumps. Everyone you do should be done with intensely as you try to jump as high as possible. Squat jumps develop explosive leg strength and work your fast twitch muscle fibers.

* Pushups - I'm sure you've heard of or have at least seen someone do a pushup. Get in a normal pushup position. Well as a review of how to do one, start off by bending your elbows as your body lays flat on the ground. Then forcefully push your whole body up off the ground causing your hands to leave the ground. Once your hands hit the ground again, lower your body down again and repeat the pushup process. You don't want to pause between motions and continue this exercise for about 20 to 30 reps. Pushups are great for developing strength and power in your chest, arms, upper back and shoulders.

* Walking lunges - You're back working out on the same field you used for those suicide springs. Stand at the end of it with your feet together. Next, make one one large step forward, and as you're doing that, you'll want to lower your body into a lunge with both knees at a 90 degree angle. Your back knee will be only a few inches from the ground but keep it from touching. Repeat this with your opposite leg as you continue lunging down the field. -Decide on what pictures you want to display. The pictures need to be close up and clear otherwise the gallery will not be sharp. -Create a theme - family vacation or a special holiday. You can update your pictures on a yearly basis...have a photo gallery party each year.

-Mixing frames of different styles and sizes can be fun, but it does take some planning. Find a consistent theme of color or type of wood to balance out the different shapes and styles...the photos need to take center stage, not the frames.

-Lay the framed photos on a tabletop or the floor and rearrange until you find a workable arrangement. Start with the largest pictures first and surround them with smaller photos.

-Find a friend or family member to help when measuring and preparing to mount on the wall. Have your leveler ready to be sure that a picture that looks straight actually is straight.

Other ideas:

Older photographs add character to your home. If you have a favorite old photo that's fading, or has been damaged or crinkled through the years, take it to a photo shop to have it restored and reprinted. You might even be able to do this yourself at home with photo imaging software. You might want to consider adding a special effect, enlarging or cropping the photo differently to add a new perspective to a familiar photo.

Great places to display your favorite photos on tabletops, desktops, bookshelves, and your family entertainment wall unit. I received a gift of an oak wood dressing screen that contained space for nine large 8x10 photos...what a wonderful display for my children's pictures.

Transfer a favorite photo onto a pillowcase or wall hanging. Photo collages of friends or family members make great placemats. Simply arrange and laminate.

Individual laminated photos can be affixed to magnets to put on the refrigerator and other metal surfaces in your home.

For the special occasion, create a photo quilt. Photos can be transferred onto fabric easily. The quilt will need to be hand washed, but what a treasure to give someone as a gift.

When professional photographers take pictures of fireworks, a night sky, or a local football game they have made numerous adjustments to assure a quality image despite the special lighting conditions. A faster shutter speed to capture action, a wider aperture to allow more light in from a darkened scene, and so forth are necessary in many circumstances. DCOTY 2007: Best Luxury Car Over $60,000 - The verdict

Oozing technology, luxury, gadgets and quality the Lexus LS460 helps redefine the luxury car market, earning it a win in the 2007 Drive Car of the Year.

The Luxury Car over $60,000 class was once a domain where money was no object. Today, though, many buyers are less concerned with ostentatious displays of wealth and are instead seeking an understated, luxurious experience at a competitive price.

BMW's 530d was chosen for final judging in DCOTY 2007 because it is, according to the judges, the pick of the mid-size luxury sedans. It competes with the Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6 and Lexus GS.

In standard trim, the BMW costs $115,000. Ours had many options, including adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning system and a heads-up display - none of which was deemed particularly vital by the judges - which took its as-tested price up to $129,770.

Last year's winner, the Mercedes S-Class, has been the traditional benchmark for big, luxury cars.

This year Mercedes delivered the S500 long-wheelbase worksburger for judging.

A starting price of $274,974 ended up as $311,474 by the time a rear seat entertainment package ($7500), sunroof ($2700), rear seat climate control ($2500), heated and ventilated rear seats ($1900) and whole lot of other fruit was added.

The Lexus LS460 has all of this gear, and more, as standard, and costs $184,900. There are no options.

The BMW should have impressed more than it did. The 3.0-litre turbo diesel delivers V8-like grunt with four-cylinder economy.

However, several judges commented that this particular example's dynamics - a long-time BMW strength - didn't feel quite right. The test car's suspension failed to exercise the disciplined control over body movement expected from a BMW, the active steering's intervention was inconsistent, too heavy at parking speeds and the occasional warning message suggested a possible malfunction. The ride was fussy on the open road, the iDrive system continued to confound and, overall, the judges decided that the BMW just didn't feel like a $130,000 car.

The Mercedes, on the other hand, exudes power and money. That said, surely the only people who perceive it as value are those committed to the three-pointed star.

The judges commented that you could, of course, forego the $36,500 worth of options on the test car and use that money to buy an A-Class for the kids.

Almost every major city in the world, from New York to London, from Shanghai to Sydney, experiences heavy traffic in its thoroughfares. Traffic spares no one, from the teenager in a motorbike to a tycoon in his luxury car, and has often been referred to as “The Great Equalizer”. Well, almost.

Traffic may hold up a business executive, as well as everyone else, from getting somewhere else on time, but while inside his luxury vehicle, he is spared from the physical discomfort that is often associated with heavy traffic. Whatever make his luxury vehicle is, he is assured a great abundance of ease and comfort, because that is the one primary thing all luxury cars are designed for.

Placing more emphasis on comfort, appearance, and amenities, luxury cars are naturally more expensive than the average car. Built with more modern technology and materials of higher quality, true luxury cars, whether it be a car, a light truck or a sport utility vehicle or SUV, could make a dent in your pocketbook, but it all depends on the size of your bank account.

Usually, luxury cars also boast of features not found in your usual vehicle. Oftentimes, the interior of a luxury car is nothing less than sumptuous, often with interior leather and woodgrain trim. Luxury cars are the playthings of the rich and famous. It comes as a status symbol to drive and ride in a classy and expensive vehicle. There is a market for this affluence; otherwise no cars of this calibre are manufactured to serve the discriminating preferences of this niche. Surprising enough, demand escalates for the more expensive types and the limited production of these fine cars makes them even pricier.

Before the end of year 2006, Rolls-Royce presented an extended version of the Phantom that is outfitted with bullet-proofed features and a roomy passenger cabin to provide lavish comfort and a pleasant driving experience. Such opulence would come at a whooping cost of $ 3.8 million dollars. Toyota on the other hand gave a lift to increasing environmental concerns by giving the industry a hybrid engine train for its Lexus LS 600h L, sold at $ 104,750 dollars.

The premium pricing of luxury cars is compensated by the built-in, power-packed performance features. A distinguishing feature is its power train. The Jaguar car series for example, carries on its hood a throbbing V-8 engine that delivers top-notch speed when moments call for it; an all wheel drive system that comes fully loaded and with superb handling capabilities. Additional features common to most luxury cars, the Mercedes-Benz E500 and BMW 500xi included, are the electronic stability program, digital surround-sound and hands free communication system that allows the driver use of the mobile phone from controls built into the steering wheel. Aesthetically, these luxury coupes are fitted with ergonomically designed leather seats, poplar or maple trims, wireless technology via Bluetooth, park-distance controls, electronic sensors and climate control sensors that can detect and evade pollutants like carbon monoxide and ethanol.

The Daimler Chrysler is popular for its top of the line engineering and car safety features while the Cadillac SRX has perfected the magnetic ride control, the XM satellite radio and back-seat DVD entertainment on top of superb luxury touches.

A new breed of luxury cars with superb aesthetic and aerodynamic features hits the market in 2007. This includes the diamond clad Mercedes-Benz, the all chrome BMW, the gold and diamond inlaid interior of the Maybach 57S and the gold plated Porsche Boxter in 22 karat beaten gold.
